What is a Golf Laser Rangefinder?

Although Nikon is well known as a top brand for cameras and photography, the company is first and foremost an optics specialist. In addition to camera lenses, Nikon also produces other optical devices – such as binoculars, spotting scopes, and laser rangefinders.
A specific category among them is golf laser rangefinders: small, handy monoculars that use a laser to measure the distance to a target. Golfers use them to find out how far it is to the flagstick, bunkers, water hazards, or other points on the course that they need to be aware of.

How does that help in golf?

For amateur golfers, a rangefinder is pure gold. It saves time and is incredibly precise. Instead of estimating from sprinkler heads or flipping through yardage books or GPS apps, the rangefinder measures directly from where you're standing – and shows the distance to the flag, not just to the center of the green.

At the tee, for example, you can quickly see how far it is to carry a fairway bunker. And on long par 5 holes, you’ll know exactly how far your next shot needs to be for a good layup.

Another cool feature of many rangefinders is the slope function.

This is especially handy during casual rounds – just a note: In tournaments where rangefinders are allowed, the slope function usually cannot be used.
It helps you better understand how elevation changes affect actual playing distances. For example: a target that’s “only” 150 meters away but 10 meters higher than your current position will actually play more like 160 meters. So, you’ll know to grab a longer club – and the opposite applies for downhill shots.

How do you actually use a golf rangefinder?

Super easy! These devices are now really user-friendly – just “aim and press the button.”
You look through the monocular, aim at the target, press the button, and the distance is displayed right in the viewfinder.

Overview of Nikon's COOLSHOT Rangefinders

Nikon currently offers three models:

  • COOLSHOT 20i GIII

  • COOLSHOT 50i GII

  • COOLSHOT PROIII STABILIZED

The good news: All three nail the basics – they provide precise distance measurements, offer 6x magnification (great for spotting distant targets), and are weatherproof – no problem if you're playing in the rain.

The differences are in the details: The higher up you go, the better the accuracy, image quality, features, and overall playing comfort.
